What is KOLA - Outdoor Learning Academy?
KOLA is a nature-based learning program designed to support youth through outdoor exploration, social-emotional learning, and real-world skill development. We focus on creating inclusive and individualized experiences for neurodiverse learners.
What time does the day start and end?
Our core program runs from 9:00am to 3:30pm. Students begin with 25 minutes of free play to ease into the day. Optional care is available from 7:00am–9:00am and 3:00pm–6:00pm based on interest and availability.
What ages do you serve?
We currently support learners ages 6–18.
Where do programs take place?
Our programs are based in Invermere, British Columbia, and take place in various local parks, forests, trails, and community spaces. This allows us to blend routine familiarity with adventurous exploration.
Can I visit before enrolling?
Absolutely! Contact us to schedule a tour.
Do you work with youth who require intensive 1:1 or medical care?
KOLA is not a therapeutic or clinical environment. We're best suited for youth who are emotionally or developmentally capable of participating in small group programming with light relational support.
Is KOLA a school?
We are a member-funded outdoor learning academy currently in the process of seeking independent school certification.
Do you follow the B.C. Curriculum?
Yes and no. While not yet an accredited school, KOLA aligns with the B.C. curriculum and expands on it with our own "living curriculum"—hands-on projects, nature immersion, and values-based learning that supports whole-child development.
Note: All students must be registered with a recognized DL program or as homeschoolers to ensure legal compliance.
How is your curriculum different from traditional schools?
Our model emphasizes experiential learning, emotional intelligence, leadership, and outdoor exploration. Students build real-world skills, resilience, and a growth mindset.
What is your approach to neurodiversity?
We embrace neurodiversity by creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment tailored to the unique needs of each student. Our experienced mentors are trained in neurodiversity support, and we offer individualized learning and behavior support plans.
How do you support students with diverse learning needs?
We personalize instruction through differentiated strategies, small group sizes, and additional support, ensuring a responsive and inclusive environment.
What is your approach to conflict resolution?
We encourage open communication. Parents should speak with their child's teacher first and reach out to the director if more support is needed. Students are also supported in learning to resolve issues early and respectfully.
Do you monitor academic progress or issue report cards?
Yes. Students are assessed through observation, projects, and portfolios. We issue reports twice per year based on each learner's Strategic Student Plan.
What happens after Grade 8?
Our learners build confidence, adaptability, and self-direction, supporting a smooth transition into high school or alternative paths.
What about my high school credits or diploma?
Our leadership program does not offer formal credits but focuses on building core competencies like public speaking, outdoor skills, and community leadership. Students remain enrolled in a DL or homeschool program to track official credits.
Is academic support available?
Yes, academic support and tutoring are available on request, led by certified educators or aligned mentors.
What if my child doesn't adjust well? Are refunds available?
We recommend trial days to assess fit. Refunds are case-dependent, with a focus on supportive transitions.
Does tuition increase annually?
It may rise slightly with inflation and development costs. Families are notified in advance.
Are there extra fees?
Yes. Some additional costs may apply for specialized gear, field trips, bus service, or optional extracurriculars. A full list is provided at the start of each season.
